Is a Bold Pattern Too Much for Every Day?

By Sami · October 2026

“I was scared the pattern might look too busy but I actually love it.” That's from Lena T., one of our newest reviews.

Almost everyone has this worry before buying something with a pattern like ours. And when people write their review afterwards, it's nearly always the same story: it turned into the thing they wear most. A bold pattern isn't too much for every day. It just needs a few simple rules, and none of them are complicated.

Rule 1

One loud thing per outfit

The cardigan is the pattern. Everything else stays plain: no printed scarf, no patterned trousers, no big logo tee underneath. Plain basics are what make a pattern look like you meant it. Two patterns fighting each other is where it starts to look chaotic.

Rule 2

Pull a colour out of the pattern

Every colour of the cardigan has cream and black in the bandana, and the black - bordeaux one also has deep red. Wear one of those colours underneath and the whole outfit suddenly looks planned.

Cream jeans with light gray. Black flares with black - bordeaux. White trousers with bordeaux. That's genuinely all there is to it.

Rule 3

Keep the shape simple

The cardigan is a bit boxy on top with dropped shoulders. Straight or wide trousers balance that out. Wide jeans are the easiest. Skinny jeans can look a little top-heavy with it, but if you love them, wear them. It's your outfit.

Rule 4

Open or zipped changes everything

Zipped up to the collar, the pattern is the whole outfit. Open over a plain white tank, a lot less of it shows and it looks way calmer. So on days you want it quieter, for uni, work, or a family lunch, just wear it open.

Rule 5

Nervous? Start with the softest colour

Light gray is the gentlest of the four. The bandana is there, but it isn't shouting. Bordeaux is the opposite end. If you're not sure you're a pattern person yet, start soft. There's more on all four in our colour guide.

What people said afterwards

“At first I thought the print might be too bold for everyday outfits. But now its one of my most worn pieces. Looks so good with simple basics.”

Matilda E. · Sweden · light gray

“…The pattern makes it so much more interesting than a normal cardigan. Def worth it.”

Sophie W. · Germany · light gray

And if you want to break every rule above and wear it with patterned trousers anyway? Go for it. mayfair is for girls who wear whatever they feel like. These are tips, not laws.

Quick questions

Can I wear a patterned cardigan to work?

If knitwear is fine where you work, yes. Wear it open over a plain top with tailored trousers and it looks a lot calmer than zipped up.

What do you wear with a bold patterned cardigan?

Plain basics: a white or black tank, a plain tee, jeans or simple trousers. Ideally in one of the colours from the pattern.

Can I mix it with other patterns?

You can, but it gets busy quickly. One patterned piece per outfit is the easy way.
